Gabe loves playing basketball with his seven-year-old son, Malik, and his nine-year-old daughter, Alyssa.

"They're at the age now when they start participating in youth sports," Gabe said. "It's exciting to be able to teach them and share my love of basketball with them."

Basketball has always been a major part of Gabe's life. In high school, he was the captain of his varsity team, and he went on to play all four years in college. On weekends, he volunteers his time by coaching kids at the local recreational center.

"My dad was my biggest supporter," Gabe said. "I played sports all the time as a kid, and I remember practicing with my dad. I want to do the same for my kids and be there for them in the same way."

Because of his long history with basketball, Gabe was very familiar with the risk of injury involved. As a kid, he was never really concerned, but now as a parent, his perspective has changed.

"When I was a kid, I always got injured," Gabe said. "It's just a part of life and part of being a kid."

Now that their kids were becoming more involved in sports, Gabe and his wife looked into boosting their insurance coverage. They decided to buy accident insurance to help protect their family.

But then Gabe ended up being the one who needed it. He accidentally hurt his ankle while shooting hoops with his kids at the park.

"We initially bought the accident coverage for our kids—just in case. I didn't think I'd be the one who needed it!" Gabe said, laughing and shaking his head. "But I should've known better. I'm not as young as I used to be."

At first he hoped it was just a sprain, but it was worse. His ankle was broken and required minor surgery. While his medical insurance covered some of his costs, it didn't cover everything.

"Had it not been for the accident insurance," Gabe said, "I'm not sure we would have been able to cover all of our expenses," Gabe said. "The extra cash made a big difference."

Being the father of two active kids, Gabe needed to get back on his feet as soon as possible. And he definitely didn't want his physical injury to turn into a financial one. Fortunately, he was able to have his surgery at a local ambulatory surgical center, which provided him with top-quality care at the best value.

"I was able to get the care I needed without breaking the bank or sacrificing the quality of treatment," Gabe said. "It made all the difference, and I was back on the basketball court with my kids in no time."
